HEALTHY ATHLETES

What is Healthy Athletes?

Healthy Athletes (HA) is a health screening and education program designed for people with intellectual disabilities. HA Screenings are offered in eight medical disciplines and are administered by volunteer health care providers. Launched in 1997, HA has made Special Olympics the largest health care provider for people with Intellectual Disabilities in the world.

In order for athletes to perform at their best, both on and off the playing field, we believe promoting a healthy lifestyle is critical to their success. The Healthy Athletes program is dedicated to providing health services and education to Special Olympics athletes, and changing the way health systems interact with people with intellectual disabilities.

Healthy Athletes Disciplines:

  • Fit Feet (podiatry)
  • FUNfitness (physical therapy)
  • Health Promotion (better health and well-being)
  • Special Olympics-Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes (vision)
  • Special Smiles (dentistry)
  • Strong Minds (emotional well-being)
